TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars soccer teams jumped head first into a new season on the weekend, with both putting smiles on the faces of their coaches.
The girls squad missed a gold medal in penalty kicks at a tournament at South Colchester Academy, while the boys finished with a 2-1-1 record at an event at Hants East Rural High.
The girls team opens the regular season at home Thursday when they host the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals at 4:30 p.m., while the boys travel to take on the Royals, also at 4:30 p.m.
The girls team allowed no goals throughout the tournament until the penalty kick session in the final, which they lost 3-2 to Central Kings.
The score was knotted 0-0 at the end of
regulation.
"We dominated and we had some chances but just didn't get them in," said girls co-coach Kate Adams. "But we're really happy. Everyone played and everyone played well."
The girls opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Northeast Kings Education Centre. Lauren Sinclair netted two goals with Alex Rogers getting the other.
The Cougars then blanked the Northumberland Nighthawks 3-0 on two goals from Danielle Lauther. Kirsten MacLellan claimed the other.
Kallyn Morgan, Erin MacKenzie, Lauther and Sinclair provided goals in a 4-0 win over Avon View to finish the round robin.
The SCA Wolves finished the event 1-3 after losing 3-2 to North Nova in a shootout, 4-2 to Hants East and 5-1 to Central Kings before finishing with a 1-0 win over Avon View.
The Cougars boys opened their tournament with a 3-1 win over Kings Edgehill on a pair of goals from Chad Samson and one from Stephen Tattrie. Cobequid then fell 2-1 to Hants east. David Morrison had the lone goal.
Andrew Myette and Tattrie scored in a 2-0 win over Avon View before Cobequid battled to a 1-1 draw with Northumberland. Seth MacLean scored for Cobequid.
"We came out of the gate well," said Cougars coach Jay Foster. "But after that we looked tired so we need to be in better mental and physical game shape."
