Slopitch squads advance to regional playdowns

AMHERST - Ten teams took to the Robb's Centennial Complex on Wednesday to compete in the Cumberland District Division 3 high school slopitch tournament.
Five boys teams and five girls teams representing Oxford, River Hebert, Springhill, Pugwash and Parrsboro played to determine who would move on to the Northumberland regional tournaments..
In the boys division, it was Oxford and River Hebert taking to the field at 9:30 a.m., with Oxford winning 16-4.
In the second game of the day Pugwash beat Springhill 9-6. After that, it was Parrsboro beating Oxford 12-2, then in the fourth game of the day Springhill defeated River Hebert 14-4.
In the fifth game Parrsboro beat Pugwash 20-8 and in the sixth and final game of the day, it was Springhill defeating Oxford 10-0.
As a result, Parrsboro will enter the regionals as the No. 1 seed from Cumberland County, while Pugwash will be No. 2 and Springhill will be the No. 3 seed.
The boys will head to Antigonish or Guysborough County next week, with the schedule and rest of competing teams yet to be finalized.
Only two of the girls teams would advance to regionals.
In the first game, it was Springhill defeating Pugwash 15-11.
In the second game Oxford beat River Hebert 10-0. After that, it was Springhill defeating Parrsboro 16-3, then in the fourth game Pugwash defeated River Hebert 13-7.
In the fifth game Springhill defeated Oxford 12-8, and in the sixth game Parrsboro defeated Pugwash 14-3. A seventh game was played to determine the second seed, and it was Parrsboro edging out Oxford by a score of 13-12.
Springhill advances to the regionals as the first seed from Cumberland County, while Parrsboro will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
The girls regionals will be played in Cumberland County next week, with the schedule and location yet to be determined.
"We had a good crowd out for most of the day and I think everyone enjoyed themselves," tournament organizer Rick Rhodes said.
"For a few of the teams, this was their last game of the season so it's nice to see everybody having a good time."
