AMHERST - The last two weekends of Amherst soccer registration haven't been as busy as in previous years and the Highland Soccer District Association is hoping for a big push on this final weekend of registration.
"It's been a little slow," said soccer coordinator Donnie Wolfe. "But we are hoping people are leaving it until the last session and we'll have a lot more people registering this weekend."
Not all numbers are down, though.
"We have a lot of new kids who haven't been involved in it before," said Wolfe.
"We have a lot of four-, five- and six-year-olds who have moved here from other parts of the country."
House league, which is for ages 4-14, begins in early June and runs until late August.
Wolfe said he is also seeing more kids who have gone through the system showing interest in coaching a team.
"It's nice to see a few more come back and get involved," said Wolfe.
The last two registration sessions are Friday and Saturday at the Superstore. Friday's session goes from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday's session runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Having had kids in this league for the past 6 years or so, I have a feeling that numbers are down because familes in the outlying areas are finding some less expensive soccer programs closer to their homes. I am not sure where the money goes, it is quite pricey and does not seem to be getting invested in equipment (eg. nets). Having said that, our kids will likely be enrolling yet again as they do enjoy it, just with a bigger wince when hadning the fees over.
