AMHERST - The annual Nova Scotia Mainland Midget-New Brunswick Midget AAA Development League all-star weekend, held this past Saturday and Sunday was another success.
Before the game in Amherst, Kathy Bates and Brenda Merrill presented $500 from the Corey Bates-Nick Merrill Memorial Trust Fund to Betty Currie of the Cancer Society.
The donation and proceeds raised at the all-star game go toward a camp in Pictou County attended by children with cancer.
The Bates-Merrill memorial fund was set up by friends and family of Corey Bates and Nick Merrill and is funded by an annual softball tournament, which is played in August.
Both young men passed away in a car accident.
Before the presentation of the cheque it was said, "This is a perfect day to make this donation since it's Corey's birthday and he would have been turning 23."
The games were dominated by the road teams with the New Brunswick all-stars winning the first game 10-4 in Amherst.
The Nova Scotia all-stars bounced back with a 5-1 win during the second game in Westfield, N.B., on Sunday.
In Westfield, it was Alan Fiddes who led the way with a natural hat trick, scoring the game's first three goals all in the second period.
Jordan Wright added a penalty shot goal and Scott Duncan rounded out the outburst.
Ryan Blaauwendraat and Zack Winters each contributed a pair of assists.
Brian Leger collected New Brunswick's only goal half way through the third period.
The first game featured lots of scoring by New Brunswick with eight different players finding the range.
Sam Maguire and Jordan Murray each had a pair of goals while Tyler Clair contributed four assists.
Scoring singletons were Paul Comeau, Justin McManus, Brian Leger, Aaron Hood, Colton Stairs and Mitchell Donnelly.
Brad Daley led the Nova Scotia contingent in the first game with a pair of goals while Mitch Gammon and Ryan Blaauwendraat collected singles.
Sheldon Muise had a pair of helpers.
Both teams had used three goaltenders in each game with Derrick Tate, Garrett Nelson and Corey Beaver suiting up for the Nova Scotia team. For New Brunswick Sebastien LeBlanc, Brandon Thibeau and Jeremy Doyle each played a period a game between the pipes.
