Vancouver-born Leroux powers U.S. over North Korea in womens U-20 World Cup

SANTIAGO, Chile The United States won the womens under-20 World Cup on Sunday, beating defending champion North Korea 2-1 after first-half goals from Sydney Leroux and Alex Morgan.

Leroux, who was born in Vancouver and now plays for UCLA, found the net in the 23rd minute with a shot from inside the box that ricocheted in off the defence, and Morgan, who plays for Cal, scored in the 42nd with a left-footed shot from 20 yards that went high into the goal.

Cha Hu Nam scored a consolation goal for North Korea in the 90th.

The American players celebrated their victory by holding a large white sign reading Gracias Chile (Thanks Chile) in large red letters in front of 12,000 cheering fans.

Earlier, Marie Pollmann scored a first-half hat trick for Germany to beat France 5-3 and finish third.

Pollmann found the net in the 10th, 29th and 31st minutes, while teammates Julia Simic in the 67th and Lisa Schwab in the 80th also scored.

Marine Pervier scored twice for France, her first coming just before halftime and her second in the 75th. Marie-Laure Delie added the teams third in injury time.
