Newfoundlanders drying out after deluge

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Many people on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula were cleaning up Sunday after nearly 100 millimetres of rain fell Saturday, causing flooding in many areas.
St. John's saw the most rain - 97.2 mm - which caused significant flooding and some damage to parts of the capital city.
Officials say the flooding was so bad at a soccer pitch in the city that the artificial turf lifted up.
Several areas in downtown St. John's were also closed to traffic because of high water levels.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says calls started coming in at around 5 p.m., about several washouts and rock slides.
At one point, officers were tied up at 11 different locations but there were no reports of accidents.
