AMHERST - They came, they saw and they conquered.
The Amherst Regional High School Vikings boys soccer squad defeated South Colchester 3-1 last night on the ARHS soccer pitch.
With the win, the Vikings clinched first place in the high school soccer league and will therefore host the regional final in two weeks time.
"It was a good game all around," coach Duane Starratt said. "We played very well defensively."
Scoring for ARHS were Mark Harris with two goals and Luke Penney with a single.
"South Colchester scored on a penalty shot which came after an unintentional hand ball," Starratt added. "That was a bit of bad luck."
If they win the regional final, the Vikings will then host the provincials.
"The regional final will be a very important game," coach Fred Gould said. "And judging by the competition, we have a chance to do very well."
Gould and Starratt said this year's team is as talented as last year's but there are differences.
"I think we're a little bigger in size," Gould said. "And we're probably a little tighter as a team. We're playing more of a team game."
They are also an older team.
"We have 12 Grade 12 players and five players from Grade 11," Starratt said. "So it's definitely an older team."
Before the regional final, the Vikings still have some regular season business to take care of. Next Wednesday, the Vikings will be put to the test when they host East Hants. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
A good-sized crowd was on hand for last nights contest and both coaches hope a lot of fans come out to support their team next week.
