AMHERST - With the playoffs fast approaching, Carter's Cresting under 14 girls soccer team is peaking at just the right time.
Carter's recently played the top team in the Highland Soccer League and, despite the better effort, came away with a 1-1 draw.
"Technically, it was the best we played all year," Coach Brittany Carter said.
Scoring the goal for the local side was striker Jessica Rossong.
The goal was set up by a tremendous kick from midfielder Cara Polegeto.
Coach John Rossong said, "players like Polegeto, Deanielle Young and Alison Pickard-Tattrie are coming into their own and hopes are the team can repeat their playoff and provincial successes of 2007."
Last year, Carter's Cresting won the provincial championship.
The difference between last year and this year is that the team has moved up from Tier 2B to Tier 2A.
"That brings on stiffer competition," Coach Carter said. "But with the improvements we've made the team is becoming recognized as one of the stronger Tier 2A teams in Nova Scotia.
Next Wednesday, Carter's travel to Pictou to play its final game of the regular season against Pictou County.
"Next Wednesday is a very important game," Rossong said.
A win or a loss will determine if Carter's finishes second or third in the league.
Securing second place would help in the playoffs.
"In order to advance from the playoffs to the provincials we need to win two games," Rossong added. "It will be a real challenge." The playoffs are hosted by Pictou, Aug. 19-21.
