AMHERST - Showing little sign of rust from an extended Christmas break, the Amherst Ramblers got their first goal Saturday on a second period penalty shot and never looked back, dumping the Charlottetown Abbies 4-1.

With the win the Ramblers increase their season point total to 37, five behind the Weeks Crushers out of Pictou County who they will host here Tuesday.

I think the turning point was when Doug Doyle scored on the penalty shot, said Amherst coach Corey Crocker. Up to that point we had been out shooting them but they just werent going in.

After that it seemed like the flood gates opened.

The home side was down by one when Doyle beat Hubert Morton at 11:20 of the middle frame to tie the game 1-1.

In the third, the Ramblers beat Morin three more times with goals coming from Derek Smith just 26 seconds in and Brent Lynch adding a power-play marker at 5:32 before Andrew Oakley got his 12th of the season at 15:18. Jordan Escott picked up three assists on the night, while team scoring leader Matt Squires, Adam Chipman and Lee Denny each added an assist to their points total.

We executed our game plan, Crocker said. We scored some timely goals and got some timely saves.

Andrew Flemming stopped 28 of 29 for the win while Morin finished 38 of 42 for the Charlottetown team that sits fourth in the Meek Division Standings.

Attendance at Amherst Stadium was about 900.

In their Bent Division rival Crushers the surprising Ramblers (17-13-1-2) will face a team that sits at 21-16-1-0 in the standings and has beaten them in three of four meetings this season.

But if Crocker is concerned he isnt showing it.

Were not in a sprint, he said of his teams quest to secure a playoff spot. Were in a marathon.

Crocker said not to expect any line-up changes from the squad the faced the Abbies on Saturday.
