Amherst Pumpkin Run 5K marks seventh and final race of the 2013 Cross Border Series

Count Dracula (left) was one several Amherst Pumpkin 5K Run/Walk participants who got into the spirit of Halloween five days early Saturday night in Amherst during the seventh and final leg of the 2013 Cross Border Challenge Series.

AMHERST-Even Count Dracula himself made a special appearance five nights earlier than usual on Saturday Oct. 26 to take part in the Pumpkin Run 5K, the seventh and final leg of the 2013 Cross Border Challenge.

The 5 K Run/Walk, which started and ended with a lap of the Dickey Park Trail, also consisted of two laps of each of the following streets: East Pleasant, Willow, Townshend and Charles.

One of the many who participated in the Pumpkin run was Dayle Morris Quinn of River Hebert. "I survived the 5K, said Quinn. “My goal for next time will be more running than walking. I think I am hooked - it was fun."

The theme of the 5K was that pumpkins will light your way with jack o’ lanterns and Halloween music. The organizers of the run also wanted people to dress up in their best Halloween costume, something that a number of runners did.

In addition to the aforementioned Count Dracula, Batman, Cat woman, Captain Canada, cats, clowns, bees and other colourful creatures also graced the run that saw many other runners wearing such appropriate nighttime running apparel as neon green outfits and reflectors on their clothing.

Following the race, participants enjoyed some homemade pumpkin pie, Halloween cupcakes, hot chocolate and non-alcoholic apple cider.

Each participant was timed, receiving a special pumpkin finisher medal in the process. While results from last night's Pumpkin Run 5K were not available as of press time, the results of the previous six legs of the 2013 Cross Border Challenge are available online at http://crossborderchallenge.com/raceresults.html
