The Swift Current Comp. Colts are only two wins away from a trip to Hoopla.

The Colts placed second at a 4A Boys Basketball Conference tournament in Estevan on Saturday to secure a trip to Regionals.

The Colts, who made the trip without two players who stayed home due to illness, cruised into the Conference final with an 87-29 win over Notre Dame to open the day. The Colts put the game out of reach with 55 points in the first half to open up a 36-point lead at halftime. They held the Hounds to just 15 first half points with a full-court press, forcing turnovers and limiting the Hounds field goal attempts. Two of the Hounds’ baskets were banked-in threes from the top of the key before the Colts took the press off in the second half. Grade 12 wing Ian Hayes led the Colts with 25 points. Jordan Bloom added 12 points and Marcus Mayall scored 10.

They faced the rival Weyburn Eagles in the final and lost 73-52. The Colts trailed by only two points at halftime but allowed 45 points in the second half and scored only 26.

“We were only down two at the half, but we shot miserably in the second half.  Couldn’t make layups, jump shots or free throws,” noted coach Adam Jackson.

The game was marred by 47 fouls as both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the first half. The Colts scored only nine points in the fourth quarter to seal their fate and committed turnovers that led to transition baskets for Weyburn, who also knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the quarter.

Hayes led the offense with 11 points, followed by Marshall Siemens with 10. Jaylen and and Marcus Mayall both added nine points.

The Colts will take part in a four-team Regional tournament this weekend in need of two consecutive wins to advance to Hoopla the following weekend in Saskatoon. The Colts will enter the must-win weekend with an 18-7 record.
