Eagles place second in Division 3 provincials

SPRINGHILL – After a close final game for the Division 3 provincial title, the Springhill High School Golden Eagles placed second in the finals against Middleton Regional High School.
The Eagles opened the game scoring, taking an early lead before Middleton started to gain on them. Eagles’ coach Darrell McLellan said the game was tightly contested with both teams holding leads of 10 points.
“I feel that we played well, they worked hard,” said McLellan. “They never gave up. I’m pleased.”
With less than 10 seconds remaining, with a score of 72-75 for the home team, the Eagles’ Brenna Casey was fouled while attempting to make a three-point basket. The visiting team scored three free throws, tying the game with seconds to spare. With just under two seconds left in the game, Julie Theisen scored the winning basket, ending the game 77-75 for Middleton.
“We’re returning all of our players so we’re set to have another good season next year hopefully,” he said.
The leading scorers for Middleton were Julie Theisen with 28 points, Sydney Smith with 15 and Lauren Wentzell with 19. The leading scorers for the Eagles were Sydnee Balser with 28 points, Brenna Casey with 21 and Casie Skidmore with 13.
