OXFORD – The Oxford Regional High School Golden Bears girls basketball team were all smiles Saturday after a close game against the Cabot Trailblazers. After a tie score sent the game into over time, Oxford, who hosted the game, brought home the Division 4 provincial banner.

“It was nip and tuck the whole way through,” said Bears’ coach Peter Swan. “We’d go up by four, they’d go up by two. Then we’d go up by two and they’d go up by four. It was back and forth the whole game.”

The girls ended the first quarter with a score of 24-23 in favor of the Trailblazers. The Bears took the lead in the second quarter with a score of 35-34. The Bears held their lead in the third quarter. The team scored 18 baskets to the Trailblazers 14, taking the score to 53-48 in favour of the Bears. With a tie score of 71-71 at the end of the fourth quarter, the teams headed into overtime.

“In the overtime, we got it together and I don’t even know what the score was,” said Swan. “I think we won by 10 or eight or something. But, by the end of the game we had taken control.”

Swan said he couldn’t be happier with the way his team played. He said the crowd was crazy but gave the girls a boost to drive home the win.

“My girls played like rock stars; they were awesome,” he said. “All year, I’ve been telling them how awesome they are and today, they went out and showed me how awesome they are. It’s great.”

Top scorers for the Bears were Savannah Davis with 19 points, Ashley O’Brien with 18 and Regan Swan with 15. Top scorers for the Trailblazers were Michaela Ashford with 22 points, Kathy Dixon with 21 and Kelsey Dixon with 14.
