The Swift Current Comp. Senior Colts basketball team will host their annual eight-team home tournament this weekend, which will feature five of the six top ranked 4A teams in Saskatchewan.

The Colts, who are ranked fifth among 4A teams in the province, are coming off a silver medal performance at the St. Mary Invitational Tournament this past weekend in Prince Albert. The Colts lost the final 95-62 to St. Mary, the second ranked 4A team. Should they win their opener against North Battleford they would likely get a rematch with St. Mary in the semi-final.

The Colts will enter the weekend with an impressive 14-3 record and tournament titles in Lloydminster, Weyburn, and their own mini tournament in Swift Current last month.

The Colts' tournament has been renamed the Doug Armstrong Memorial Senior Boys Basketball Tournament after the longtime coach at the Comp. who passed away last year.

“Doug Armstrong was a tremendous friend, mentor, teacher and coach.  He contributed tremendously to our school basketball programs.  Whatever capacity he served, his passion for basketball was always apparent. Re-naming the tournament is a way to recognize the significance of his contributions,” explained coach Adam Jackson, who coached with Armstrong.

The Colts will open their tournament Friday at 3:30 p.m. against the North Battleford Comp. Vikings. The tournament will also feature teams from Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Yorkton, Saskatoon Mount Royal and Saint Brieux, the top ranked 1A team in Saskatchewan.

Action continues Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m., with the championship final slated for 7:35 p.m.
