It’s not all sunshine, surf and celebrity spotting; at least not for two local boys who are just back from motocross training in southern California. For the Swift Current Robertson Motorsports race team members - 16 year old Adler Irwin and 18 year old Cole Conn, it was more about the speed, dirt, and sweat.
Irwin says the training in California was hard work which required a lot of discipline, “We started our day at 7 in the morning with weight training at the gym, followed by some yoga before heading to the track for a full day of race training. When not at the track we would spend hours peddling in the hills of Temecula on road bikes.”
Motocross is as popular in California as hockey is in Saskatchewan, and you’re bound to find yourself riding side by side with some of the top international riders like Ryan Villopoto, Dean Wilson, and Ryan Dungey. “Yeah you know those are the big name riders on the Monster Energy Supercross circuit, but we are all out there working on the same bottom line, and that’s to get faster,” says Irwin. “It’s all about disciple, dedication, determination and desire.”
Irwin and Conn trained with Todd Schumlick at PerformX motocross camp in Temecula California. Irwin trained for two months and was later joined by team member Conn. One of their mentors at the camp was Shawn Maffenbeier of Swift Current. Maffenbeier currently ranks 6th in Canada and is still in California training for the Canadian National series.
“We are so lucky to have a pro rider of Maffenbeier’s skill that we can learn from,” says Conn. “And him being local is a real bonus.” Irwin and Conn are ready to take on the Provincial Motocross series which kicks off Sunday May 6th in Swift Current.
This will be Conn’s first year in the intermediate class, as he moved up from the junior rank last year, “I had a successful season last year with some Moto wins, and I feel the changes I made from last year to this season are all positive. I am definitely more prepared coming into this season.”
Both Irwin and Conn want to thank Cody Robertson of Robertson Motorsports. This is the first year Robertson Motorsports has put together a motocross team and they are looking forward to a great year.
The Swift Current motocross track is located just over the hill at the intersection of 11th Ave N.W. and the North Service Road West. Over 200 racers and fans are expected to roll into Swift Current this weekend. Races start Sunday May 6th at 9 a.m. and will run throughout the day.
