AMHERST – It’s a strong start.

The Amherst Explosion Midget Girls AAA team has won their first two games at this weekend’s Basketball Nova Scotia provincial championship tournament, being held at ARHS.

The Explosion doubled Pictou’s score, 66-33, this morning, then dominated Halifax Osprey 82-50 in the evening.

“We’re number one going into this tournament,” said Allan MacEachern, who coaches the team with Peter Swan.

“The girls are working hard…working hard in defense,” he said.

This is the third year the squad has played together. The team draws from Amherst, Springhill and Oxford. They had tryouts the first year but it’s basically become an invitational team. Explosion has won titles two years running, and hope to make it a third.

The winner of their Sunday morning game goes on to the championship, while the loser will battle for bronze.

Scoring for Amherst against Pictou were Danielle Young (with 22 points), Brenna Casey (11), Sydnee Balsar (10), Stephanie McCormick (8), Lauren MacEachern (8), Regan Swan (6), Ashley MacEachern (4), Lauren Chitty (4) and Kennedy Black. Against Osprey, scorers for Amherst were Danielle Young (22), Brenna Casey (11), Sydnee Balsar (10), Stephanie McCormick (8), Lauren MacEachern (8), Regan Swan (6), Ashley MacEachern (4), Lauren Chitty (4) and Kennedy Black (2).

Amherst’s next game is at 10:45 a.m. tomorrow. The bronze game is at 2:15 p.m., with the championship at 4 p.m.
