After claiming their first ever Prairie Athletic Conference volleyball regular season championship, the Great Plains College SunDogs Men’s team will be hoping to use home court advantage to add a playoff championship to cap a remarkable season.

The SunDogs men's team have earned the top seed for the six-team provincial championship which will be contested at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School on Nov. 18 and 19. Opening round men's qualifying games will be held on Friday night, but the SunDogs as top ranked team will advance directly to the championship semi-final at 10:45 a.m. They hope to reach the gold medal match at 5:45 p.m. The SunDogs men's squad are chasing their second championship in program history.

The SunDogs were prevented from earning a perfect 10-0 season by the Palliser Panthers from Moose Jaw on Wednesday. The host Panthers moved into  third place in the men's standings by upending the SunDogs 17-25, 24-26, 22-25. The SunDogs finish the PAC season in first place at 9-1, while the Panthers can wrap up third place in the men's draw with a win over Millar College during their season finale on Tuesday.

After claiming their first ever regular-season championship, the SunDogs are now hoping to repeat their league success at provincials.

“I knew the team was going to be competitive coming into the season,” first-year SunDogs men’s coach Travis Cuthbert stated. “Would I have guessed that we’d be 9-1 with only eight sets lost throughout the season? Absolutely not. But the entire season’s been pretty good and we’re expecting to have a strong showing at provincials.”

The SunDogs benefit from a series of tough tests during the regular season,  including a 25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 set thriller against the Kelsey Amaruks, plus a well-played 25-15, 20-25, 18-25, 25-19, 16-14 showdown against the second place Bethany Eagles.
