BIBLE HILL – Kelsey Harpman scored a try moments into overtime as the Truro Saints downed Markham 3-2 to win the women’s B division at the indoor seven rugby
“Ali Munro had a really good run and I was out on the wing. She just popped it out to me and I was running full speed and we hammered it in for the winning try,” the Beaver Brook resident said Sunday. “It felt really good after all that hard work, I guess it paid off.”
The Saints were leading the contest 2-1 before Markham scored in the dying seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.
The win capped off a perfect weekend for the Saints squad that went 4-0, including wins over Mount Allison (5-1), Enfield (2-0) and Moncton (3-0). “That’s the best Saints team I’ve seen put together,” Harpman said.
St. Francis Xavier University defeated Halifax 2-1 in the women’s A finale. Riverlake doubled UPEI 4-2 in the men’s B division while Ottawa defeated Red Deer 3-2 in men’s A.
UPEI knocked out the Saints with a 4-3 decision earlier Sunday morning in B division action. Truro had won its first two games heading into the contest. The NSAC lost its opening game to Kings Friday morning to put them into the consolation round.
Truro was knocked out of contention in the men’s A division with a 3-1 loss Friday to Red Deer. The Rams women’s B squad won Friday but lost 5-1 to Moncton on Saturday.
