AMHERST - The Amherst Regional High School Vikettes will advance to the provincials after trouncing the South Colchester Wolves by a score of 55-28 last night at ARHS.
With the win, the girls are now the 2009-10 Northumberland Region Division 2 champions, and first-year Vikettes coach Gillian Ellis couldn't be happier.
"It's really exciting," she said.
"The girls have worked hard all season so it's a nice accomplishment for them. Wining the regional makes all their hard work feel like it's paying off."
Tina Leggett and Taylor MacDonald led the charge with 13 points each, followed by Natasha Gouchie with 10, Jenna Embree with seven, Kathryn Hillier, Leah Patterson and Kirsty MacDonald with four each, and Katelyn Peters with three points.
Ellis is impressed with how the Vikettes have improved throughout the season.
"We started slow and now I think we're going full steam ahead." Ellis said.
"Our leaders are stepping up and we've been preaching to the girls to keep their composure and don't let the pressure get to them and I think they did that tonight. They came out relaxed and they stuck to the game plan and got the win."
The provincials will be held in Canning from March 4-6 and the team will practice and play games with teams from Cumberland County next week to help prepare for the tournament.
"We want to work on taking away offensive threats from our opponents by staying sharp defensively," Ellis said.
"And on offence we need to stay calm, stay focused and push the ball forward with our speed and use it to our advantage."
A schedule for next week's Vikettes games will is in the process of being prepared.
