WHISTLER, B.C. - One of Canada's top male cross-country sprinters put in a promising qualifying time Wednesday in the men's 1.6-kilometre race in the Olympic biathlon.
Stefan Kuhn of Banff, Alta., qualified for the quarter-finals in 10th position in a time of 3 minutes and 38 seconds, just 3.7 seconds behind the best time of the day.
Devon Kershaw of Sudbury, Ont. qualified 24th, while Drew Goldsack finished 40th and will not advance.
Brent McMurtry finished 41, and also will not move on.
The Norwegian team, which finished poorly in the 15-kilometre race, qualified four skiers for the quarter finals, including stars Petter Northug and Ola Vigan Hattestad.
Earlier, Chandra Crawford, gold medallist at the Turin Olympics, was one of two Canadians to qualify for the quarter-finals in the cross-country ski sprint competition.
The 26-year-old from Canmore, Alta., finished 18th in the first round of the 1.4-kilometre women's biathlon sprint. She was just behind Montreal's Daria Gaiazova in 17th.
The top 30 sprinters advance to the quarter-finals later Wednesday.
Sara Renner of Golden, B.C., failed to quality, placing 34th. She said she got caught behind a slower skier and lost two to five seconds having to go around her.
Earlier, one of the leading contenders in the sprint competition, fell off the side of the race course in training and injured her ribs. Petra Majdic of Slovenia still managed to qualify, finishing 19th.
Branislav Dmitrovic, a spokesman for the Slovenian team, said a doctor is looking at the ribs and will determine if Majdic can race in the quarter-finals.
Majdic currently ranks second in the World Cup standings.
Dmitrovic said the athlete is in considerable pain and may not be able to continue
