AMHERST - The Amherst Vikettes are a step closer to advancing to the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 2 girls basketball championship.
The Vikettes opened the Northumberland regional playdowns yesterday with a 45-35 decision over the Hants East Tigers at the ARHS?gym.
Hants East lost to South Colchester on Monday. Amherst hosts South Colchester on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., with the winner clinching a berth at provincials in Canning from March 4 to 6. The loser gets a second chance to advance at a qualifying tournament next weekend.
"We started out slow today, but our bench brought a lot of energy," said Vikettes coach Gillian Ellis. "We needed that.
"We struggled a bit and we need to focus on the small things, but at the end of the day, we got the win and we're closer to a spot at provincials."
Tina Leggett led the way for the winners with 15 points. Kathryn Hillier chipped in 13.
Rounding out scoring for the Vikettes were Kirsty MacDonald with eight, Katelyn Peters with four, Taylor MacDonald and Jenna Embree with two apiece, and Natasha Gouchie with one.
