AMHERST - We may have had some cold snaps over the past week, but the cold is what's inspiring the inaugural Outdoor Challenge.
The event, to be hosted by the Cumberland YMCA and Public Health, will pit teams of five together to compete in a variety of fun challenges testing the strength, endurance, balance and creativity of those involved.
"The YMCA wanted to be involved because it's a great chance to provide an opportunity for residents to get out and be active during the first Cumberland Winter Festival," said Jessica Allen, the Y's health, fitness and recreation manager.
"The money raised through registration will be split between the YMCA for program planning and development, and the Jump Start program. With the Jump Start program, all that money will stay in Cumberland County," Allen added.
The event begins at 11 a.m. on Feb. 27, at the Rotary Park off Elmwood Drive. Whether rain or shine, the event will go ahead, so participants are asked to dress appropriately.
Prizes will be given away during the day, with refreshments available as well.
Allen said there are some teams that have expressed an interest in the outdoor challenge, including the Cumberland Health Authority and the YMCA.
"We're also hoping for some emergency personnel such as police, paramedics and firefighters, and of course some community teams," she said.
Registration is now open and an early bird registration fee of $75 will be in affected until Feb. 15. After Feb. 15, registration goes up to $100.
Registration will close at 5 p.m. on Feb. 26, the day before the event.
Registration can be done as a team of five, and individuals wanting to participate can sign up and be placed on a team.
Anyone looking for information or to register can contact the YMCA at 667-9112, or email hfr@ymcaofcumberland.com.
