AMHERST - Karen Smith still can't believe she will be among some of the world's elite athletes when the 2010 Winter Olympics kick off later this week.
The Springhill resident is leaving early today for Vancouver where she will be part of the McDonald's Olympic Champion Crew that will work at one of three on-site McDonald's in the athletes' village.
"I'm a little bit nervous but I can't wait to go," Smith said Monday while making her final preparations for her 18-day trip. "When I was first selected I was very excited and sort of wondered what I have I gotten myself into, but as it has gotten closer I've been more and more excited about it. It's going to be a great experience."
While there, she and her fellow McDonald's team members will experience the Winter Olympics and visit cultural and recreational sites.
A team leader at McDonald's in Amherst, she is one of 300 employees, including 11 from Nova Scotia, selected to work at the Olympics. The employees were selected from a group of 77,000 crew members from 1,400 restaurants across Canada.
Now that the moment has arrived, Smith plans to make the most of it. It's only the second time she has flown and it will be first excursion west of Quebec. Along with doing some shopping, Smith is hoping to see some of the events.
"I wouldn't be disappointed if I got to see some skating," said the mother of four. "I'm not a big hockey fan, but I know what Sidney Crosby looks like. It would be nice to meet him there."

We're proud of this? We can't qualify an athlete, but we can send a specialist in Quarter Pounders? Okay - congrats Karen, bring home the golden fries for NS.
