BROOKFIELD - The Amherst Vikings basketball team came home with another tournament title under their belts this weekend.
The Vikings defeated Colchester Christian Academy 56-36 behind the 25-point performance of Richard Hope at the eight-team South Colchester Academy Wolfpack Tournament.
The full court 1-2-1-1 defence of the Vikings jumped them into an early 24-point lead and was a major difference throughout the contest.
The Vikings played all weekend without their starting forward, Kevin Lepage, however had a number of their non-starters step up and play a lot of quality minutes.
Coach Reg Caulfield was extremely pleased with the performance of Patrick Neufeld and Shaddy Mohamad.
Scorers included Ryan Budd with 13 points, Sam Mohamad and Dylan Rushton with six points each, C.J. Curtis with four points, and Ryan Thompson with two.
In semifinal action, the Vikings defeated Hants East 67-45. Scorers were Hope with 26, Sam Mohamad with 12, Ryan Budd with seven, Neufeld and Curtis with six apiece, Rushton with five, and David Manuele and Thompson each with two.
Caulfield was pleased with his team's performance except for the fact that "we are not valuing the ball as we commit too many unnecessary turnovers. We had a good opportunity to work on our new zone offense that resulted in stronger offensive rebounding," he said.
"For the next few weeks, we really have to work hard as a team on every aspect of the game and cannot afford to have players lose focus on our objective of winning the provincial championship."
Amherst will host this year's NSSAF?Division 2 provincial championship in March and will be playing Hants East later this month in the Northumberland regional playoffs.
