Jones wins third straight Scotties title with 8-7 win over P.E.I. in extra end

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Make it three straight for Jennifer Jones at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Jones and Team Canada beat Prince Edward Island's Kathy O'Rourke 8-7 in 11 ends Sunday to win the title.
Jones scored one in the 11th to give her rink a fourth Scotties title overall.
"I never thought we would do it," Jones said. "To win three is incredible. The way we won today, the way we came back was awesome."
P.E.I. held a 6-3 lead heading into the seventh end before Team Canada battled back to take a 7-6 lead.
"Obviously we were disappointed with the way we were playing," Jones said. "We're a scrappy team and we never give up. We made big shots when we had to so we wanted to hang in there and make the shots to win. It just worked out well for us."
Jones stole a pair in the ninth end to take a 7-6 lead but P.E.I. scored one in the tenth end to force extra ends.
"Certainly we would have liked to make history and finish that off but we gave it our best and it just turned out to be a couple inches short today," said O'Rourke.
O'Rourke wouldn't go as far as to say that inexperience played a role in the loss.
"We missed the draw against the two (in the ninth end)," she said. "The girls got fooled a little bit on the sweep and it got to the fudge part faster than we thought. The weight was perfect and we weren't really sweeping that hard. All of a sudden it got to the centre line and it just stopped. I don't think it was nerves at all. That's what happens sometimes."
O'Rourke added that against top-notch competition like Team Canada, no lead was completely safe but the two teams staked up well against each other.
"I don't know if I see much difference (between the two teams). We knew when we got up with the lead that it would never be enough against a good team like Jones' team," said O'Rourke. "I knew they would keep coming at us and keep fighting hard because that's what a really good team does."
Jones spoke highly of P.E.I.'s Erin Carmody, who threw skip rock for P.E.I. for the tournament.
"She played great," Jones said of the 21-year-old. "She's got a great future ahead of her. I'm sure we'll see them again. It was a great game today and it was a ton of fun to play and I'm sure they'll be back."
Jones became just the third skip to win the tournament three straight times - Colleen Jones and Vera Pezer were the others. Colleen Jones is the only skip to have won the tournament four straight times.
