ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Eastern Newfoundland is digging out from a major winter storm that left historic parts of downtown St. John's badly damaged.
Snow is waist deep in some places in the city, but the worst damage was reported in the Outer Battery and in Quidi Vidi Village.
At the height of the storm, pounding surf washed away a fisherman's wharf at the edge of the Battery, a collection of picturesque clapboard buildings that cling to the edge of steep rocks at the east end of the harbour.
Two twine stores were also badly damaged.
As well, at least one home has been evacuated, and there is concern about two others that were battered by waves coming through the narrow entrance to the harbour.
Meanwhile, residents in Quidi Vidi village say several sheds, wharfs and stores were washed away.
