WENTWORTH - Disabled skiers and snowboarders throughout the Atlantic region will test Ski Wentworth's new terrain at the end of the month at the second Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing Atlantic Festival.
The event, which runs Saturday through Monday, is an opportunity to introduce persons with disabilities from Atlantic Canada to skiing and snowboarding.
The festival weekend promotes the development of adapted skiing and snowboarding programs in Eastern Canada.
Linda Scott, a skier with a physical disability and the Nova Scotia representative on the national board of directors, is the head of the organizing committee.
"We will be using the terrain that was developed by the Canada Winter Games Host Society to host the alpine and para-alpine events in 2011," she said.
This will be the first time a Para-alpine event will be held in the Maritimes.
Recreational and competitive adaptive skiing adds a dimension to the life of a person with a disability they have often lost, but perhaps never enjoyed. Students from the IWK in recreational therapy will be volunteering to learn more about how adaptive skiing can be included in the life of anybody with a disability.
The weekend will also include a kitchen party the night before the festivities start, and a banquet Saturday night.
Guest speakers include Paul Bowie, venue leader for volunteers for the alpine/para-alpine and freestyle events for the 2011 Canada Winter Games as well as being involved with disabled waterskiing.
Eric Payne, a disabled skier, will speak about the Soldier On program partnering CADS and the Canadian Paralympic Committee to expose or reintroduce disabled members of the military to adaptive skiing. Payne is also actively involved with sledge hockey in Prince Edward Island.
