TRURO - West Colchester residents who
are hoping that Colchester County will take over possession and maintenance of a private road will at least get a chance to discuss the issue.
Landowners in the vicinity of Broderick Lane have become concerned over increased traffic on the narrow, gravel road since the Five Islands lighthouse was relocated to the area last year.
The residents have generally maintained the road themselves but with the increased traffic have found that keeping up with potholes and other problems has gone beyond what they can reasonably manage.
Council has a policy of not assuming ownership of private roads unless they have already been built up to the standards of a public throughway, which Broderick Lane has not.
But given the fact the land on which the lighthouse now sits was donated to the municipality and because of the increased traffic it has created, council decided to work with the residents towards and instructed staff to provide information on what preliminary costs for a "reasonable fix" would be.
