AMHERST - Howie Gray and his teammates have suffered their first loss in a triple-knockout provincial qualifier.

Gray, along with lead Desi Hurley, second Ray Fowler and third Bob Sutherland, was handed an 8-3 loss to the Mayflower Curling Club's Jamie Murphy during the opening of the Nova Scotia Curling Association's men's northern zone Molson Tankard playdowns.

The playdowns are a qualifier for the provincial championships to be held in Dartmouth next month.

Gray's next match is at 4:30 p.m. today.
