Seventeen locals receive belt upgrades at karate academy

AMHERST - Examinations early in December saw 17 locals receiving new karate colours.
Members of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy hosted clinics and exams at Cumberland North Academy Dec 4 and 5.
Master Frank Woon-A-Tai, eighth degree black belt, was the guest instructor and examiner who oversaw students earning passing grades.
Ben Pitman and Carol Gould were the only two students to earn third-degree black belts, while Dale Ross now has a second-degree black belt and Rod Boland a first.
Sydney Skinner and Alana MacDonald moved on to third brown belt, while Kathryn Maddison graded to second brown belt. Colton Pyke joined the ranks of first brown belts.
Jason Taylor was the lone student who moved on to second purple belt, and Jonathan Bradet-Legris and Michael Bradet-Legris graded to first purple belt.
Ross Blanch and Hannah Jolly moved on to green belts, while Mark Jackson and Julia Rudderham graded to orange.
