Late collapse sinks Vikings at Christmas Classic

AMHERST - A second-half collapse allowed the Three Oaks Axemen of Summerside to open up a big gap en route to a 63-53 win over the Amherst Regional High School Vikings in semifinal action last night at the ARHS Christmas Classic boys basketball tournament.
Three Oaks advances to today's championship game at 7 p.m., against the Charlottetown Rural Raiders, who edged the Rothesay Red Hawks 77-74 in the other semifinal Monday. Amherst takes on Rothesay in the bronze-medal matchup at 1 p.m.
Brett Montgomery scored 22 points, including four three-pointers in the third quarter, to lead the way for the Axemen. Kendal Steele added 13 points and Andrew Smith had nine.
Brian MacKay had seven points for the Summerside school while Will Brown and Chris Thompson with four each and Tyler Bernard and Scott Dewar each had two.
Richard Hope had 15 points for Amherst, which led 27-23 after the first half, while Ryan Budd had 14 points and Sammy Mohamad scored 10.
Kevin LePage with seven, C.J. Curtis with five and Ryan Thompson with two also scored.
Amherst opened the tourney with a 88-54 win over the Pugwash District High Panthers, with Ryan Budd scoring 25 points and Sammy Mohamad adding 23.
Richard Hope with 14, Kevin Le-Page with nine, Matt Thorne with seven, C.J. Curtis with six and Shaddy Mohamad and Ryan Thompson with two also scored.
Blaine Reid had 14 points for Pugwash while Jordan MacAulay scored 11 and Alex Parker added eight.
Kris Allen with seven, Matt Morrison with six and Jeff Blaikie and Matt Blaikie with two each also scored for Pugwash.
Three Oaks cruised to a 90-53 win over Avon View earlier Monday with Tyler Bernard scoring 27 points, Scott Dewar scoring 18 points and Lucas Coughlin scoring 12.
Dylan Gallant, Brian MacKay and Chris Thompson each had six points for the Axemen, Andrew Smith had five, Brett Montgomery had four and Will Brown had two.
Jared Fielden had 17 points and Kevin Upshaw 11 for Avon View while Tevaughn Scott had eight, Luke Redden seven and Alex Dalton and Shane O'Reilly two each.
Aaron Robbins scored 27 points as Charlottetown Rural defeated North Nova 63-60 while Sean Seviour chipped in 14 and Kyle Welton had 12.
Patrick Davis and Andrew Clark with six each and Frank Folwell with two also scored.
Bryson MacDonald had 14 and David Benoit 12 for North Nova while Dylan Mulder had 10, Keir Feehan had six, Grayson MacDonald and Evan Lorimer each had five, Marcus MacLean had three and Bradley Johnson and Sean Munro each had two.
In the other round robin game, Tom Lutes had 21 points and Liam Shea each had 20 as Rothesay defeated Hants North 85-69.
Cameron Mosley with 13, Brandon Churhill with 12, Stephen Zed with 11, Chris Schaerer with five and Ben Hayward with two also scored for Rothesay.
Colby Turple scored 26 points and Kyle Harvey had 20 for Hants North while Sean Harvey with eight, Brett Vanderkooi with six, Brian Hamilton with five and Jeremy Brown with two also scored.
Action resumes at 9 a.m., today with Pugwash facing Avon View followed by North Nova against Hants North.
The seventh-place game goes at 3 p.m., and the matchup for fifth place at 5 p.m.
