TRURO - A local cadet is gearing up for an expedition in New Zealand.
Francis Castein, 17, of Mangenese Mines, will participate in a 10-day army cadet expedition to New Zealand.
The chief warrant officer with 2928 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Truro leaves Dec. 26 and is one of only 15 army cadets from across the country chosen to attend in addition to three staff.
"I was surprised. I want to learn about the New Zealand culture," said Castein.
"It will make me realize what we have in Canada and I would not always get the opportunity to do something like this."
Expedition activities will feature ocean kayaking, hiking, cultural activities and an opportunity to interact with New Zealand cadet forces.
Castein earned the trip based on her level of physical fitness (gold standard), her marks at the National Star Certification Exam and recommendation from the local commanding officer.
