AMHERST - Hitting the court for their first game of the season, the Amherst Regional High School Vikettes basketball team takes on Pugwash tonight at the ARHS gymnasium.
"They've been practising really hard and getting their plays down," said first-year Vikette coach Gillian Ellis.
Ellis, who coached basketball at E.B. Chandler for the last five years, will be joined on the sideline by assistant coach Melissa Blake.
Both played on the court together when they attended ARHS and Ellis said,
"We're both rookie coaches here at ARHS and we're really excited about the upcoming season."
The Vikettes have 11 players, eight of which are returnees. Three are in Grade 12 and three are rookies.
"The girls work hard and we have some real leaders on this team," said Ellis.
Ellis coached all the girls during her tenure at E.B. Chandler.
"I had them all at some point, so it makes it familiar," said Ellis. "They know my style and I know what they bring to thee table. It's nice to reconnect."
The Vikettes won several provincial championships under Fred Gould and Ellis hopes to continue the winning tradition.
"The goal the girls have set for themselves is to win the Division 2 championship," said Ellis.
"We have a lot of work to do from now until the end of the season but that's hopefully where we'll end up when all is said and done."
Blake said the girls still need to work on their conditioning and quickness but added, "offensively I think we're strong."
Both coaches are looking forward to a fun and successful season.
"It will be fun," said Blake.
"I get to spend four nights a week with my best friend while we coach a great group of girls."
After the Vikettes first test tonight, they will hold their first tournament of the season Friday and Saturday.
"It will be a good chance for us to see what we have to work on and the games will be good learning experience for us as well," said Ellis.
"We have a great bunch of girls and hope to bring a fresh way of looking at things and we hope to have a really good season."
Tip-off time is 7:30 p.m.
