Vikings go undefeated at own tourney

AMHERST - Richard Hope scored 39 points and Ryan Budd added 19 as the Amherst Regional High School Vikings downed the Breton Education Centre Bears of New Waterford 85-72 to capture the championship at the ARHS Vikings Tip-off basketball tournament Saturday.
Sammy Mohamad had 13 points, Kevin LePage five and C.J. Curtis one point for Amherst. Kyle MacDonald had 32 for the Bears and Jeremy Pioreson netted 17.
Collin Larade with 11, Tyler Bishop and Kyle Burns with four apiece, Tyler Matheson with three and Kenny Power with one point also scored for BEC.
"This was a big win for us as it will rank us as one of the top teams in Division 2," Vikings coach Reg Caulfield said.
"The players executed the game plan and must be given high accolades for their performance."
"This is a motivational win for us and we can only get better as the season progresses," added Hope.
The Vikings will be in Prince Edward Island next weekend competing at a tournament at Bluefield High School near Charlottetown. Amherst opens at Thursday at 6 p.m., against the host Bobcats.
Amherst opened the tournament with a 70-47 win over Colonel Grey of Charlottetown on Friday and defeated North Colchester 62-51 early Saturday.
Colonel Grey won the bronze medal with a 75-64 victory over Pugwash while Tantramar High took fifth spot with a 75-72 triumph over North Colchester.
In other games, Pugwash defeated Tantramar 71-61, Colonel Grey defeated North Colchester 58-45, Breton Education Centre defeated Pugwash 94-39 and Tantramar lost to Breton 106-61.
