Cougars ousted by Griffins, settle for bronze

TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars girls volleyball team fell to the Horton Griffins on the weekend in the semifinal of the Hants East Invitational but recovered to come home with a bronze medal.
It is the second consecutive tournament the Cougars were given an early exit after taking six of the first seven events they entered.
The Cougars defeated Par-en-Bas 25-15, 25-21 in the bronze-medal match.
Cobequid squandered a five-point lead in the opening set against Horton to fall 25-20 before winning the second set 25-12. Horton took the deciding set 15-13.
Cobequid opened the tournament with straight set wins over Sackville (25-9, 25-15), Middleton (25-12, 25-17) and Sydney Academy (25-12, 25-11) before splitting sets with Horton (25-15, 23-25) to win their pool.
The Cougars then swept Sydney Academy 25-8, 25-22 in the quarter-final.
The Cougars #2 squad, also competing in the top division, lost to Bridgewater (17-25, 13-25), Hants East (19-25, 12-25), Par-en-Bas (20-25, 22-25) and split with Avonview (25-17, 22-25) to finish fourth in their pool. Cobequid then dropped a consolation playoff match to Sackville 25-21, 22-25, 7-15.
Anastasia Callaghan made an amazing 60 kills at the event for the top team, with 63 digs, 47 passes and 11 aces.
Kiersten Cormier led the team in blocks with 35 and added 50 kills.
Shakara Paris was the top server with 17 aces and 62 successful serves.
Nicole Munro led the #2 squad with 37 successful serves including five aces, while Brittany George made 35 serves and seven aces.
Munro added 37 digs and Rachel Wright made 23 blocks. Melissa Atkinson and Kayla Wolfe collected 25 digs each.
Both teams are competing in the Northumberland Region Championships this weekend. Team #1 is at Dr. John Hugh Gillis for the Division 1 tournament, while Team #2 is at South Colchester Academy for the Division 2 event.
