Cougars volleyball team falls in final

TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars girls volleyball team had its tournament winning streak ended on the weekend by the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals in the final of the Husky Cup at Saint Mary's University.
The Cougars got off to a slow start in the match and never recovered, falling 25-23, 25-18.
Meanwhile, Cobequid's #2 squad won the tournament's second division with a three-set win over Millwood (22-25, 25-16, 15-11). It was the second team's third tournament win this
season.
Cobequid #1 kicked off the tournamnt with straight sets wins over Prince Andrew (25-19, 25-14) and Sackville (25-18, 25-20) before beating the Riverview Royals 20-25, 27-26, 15-10 in three sets to finish first in their pool.
Cobequid then defeated the Hants East Tigers 25-17, 25-7 in their
semifinal.
Cobequid #2 claimed straight sets wins over Citadel (25-19, 25-20) and Liverpool (25-8, 25-1) to win their pool.
They then defeated NDA of Cheticamp, 25-22, 25-22 in the semifinal.
Cobequid #1's Anastasia Callaghan was named the tournament's top defensive player with 35 digs and 54 perfect passes. She also added 35 kills. Kiersten Cormier added 35 blocks while Sam Fanning had 17 kills. Heather Mills made 35 digs and Shakara Paris collected 10 aces.
Cobequid #2's Nicole Tower was named the tournament's most outstanding setter, Kayla Wolfe was top defender and Rachel Wright was tournament MVP.
Nicole Munro had 16 digs, nine aces, 12 kills and 10 passes. Wright made 16 kills and 20 blocks, Melissa Atkinson posted 23 digs and Sareen Singh had 39 successful serves including 11 aces.
Both teams are in Milford this weekend for the Hants East
Invitational.
