TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars girls volleyball team got out of the gate slow, but in the end it mattered little.
The Cougars stormed their way to the McDonald's Golden Archs Invitational Tournament title on the weekend in Antigonish, beating the host Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals in straight sets (25-20, 25-15) in the final.
The title gives the Cougars six tournament crowns in the seven they've entered, a better start than coach Bob Piers had hoped for with just three players returning from last year's undefeated provincial championship squad.
The title was also Cobequid's fifth straight Golden Arches crown.
The Cougars opened the event with a straight sets loss to the Hants East Tigers before using three sets to beat Avonview to finish second in their pool.
Cobequid then handed the Riverview Royals a 25-19, 25-16 setback in the quarter-final before defeating the C.P. Allen Cheetahs by the same score in the semifinal.
With several teams dropping out of the event, the Cougars' second team moved into the Tier 1 bracket and fell in straight sets to C.P. Allen (18-25, 11-25), Bridgewater (17-25, 20-25), Riverview (13-25, 24-26) and to Hants East in the quarter-final (14-25, 22-25).
The second team had only eight players on hand for the event.
The first team's Anastasia Callaghan was named tournament MVP while teammates Kiersten Cormier and Heather Mills were named to the tournament all-star squad.
Callaghan made 77 perfect passes and led the Cougars with 53 kills. Cormier made 36 blocks and 41 kills and Mills led the first team with 46 digs. Bethany Ferguson made 10 kills in 14 attempts.
For the second team, Nicole Munro collected 20 kills, 17 passes and 16 digs. Kayla Wolfe led with 25 digs.
Both teams are in Halifax this weekend at the Saint Mary's University High School
Invitational.
In boys action, the Cougars were downed 21-25, 23-25 by the Sackville Kingfishers in the West Kings Wolverine Classic.
The loss is the fourth this season in five tournaments for the Cougars in a semifinal, dropping Cobequid to 17-10. The other was a quarter-final setback.
The Cougars finished second in the round-robin at 3-1 with wins over Three Oaks (25-20, 25-19) and Par-en-Bas (25-6, 25-9) before falling 23-25, 20-25 to West Kings. Cobequid then defeated Horton #2 25-19, 25-15 to finish the round-robin before beating the Citadel Phoenix 25-20, 21-25, 15-11 in the
quarter-final.
Leading the way for the Cougars was Kristen O'Brien with a 23 passes, 22 digs and 27 kills. Ben Fraser collected team highs with 32 kills, 10 aces and six blocks and Scott Worsley made 16 passes, 19 digs and seven blocks.
The Cougars are in action again this weekend at the inaugural J.L. Illsley Judges
Invitational.
