Cougars teams dominate Sackville volleyball tourney

TRURO - It was a Cougars sweep at the recent Sackville High School Invitational Girls Volleyball Tournament.
The Cougars #1 squad won the 15-team Tier 1 division with a straight sets victory (25-20, 25-23) over the hosts in the final, while the Cougars #2 squad took the 12-team Tier 2 title with a 25-20, 25-13 win over the Sir John A. Macdonald Flames.
The Cougars top team came out on fire with straight sets wins over Avon View, Corner Brook and Auburn Drive before splitting sets with C.P. Allen (20-25, 25-17) to sit first overall in round-robin play. Three of the four semifinal teams (Cobequid, Corner Brook and C.P. Allen) came from Cobequid's division.
The Cougars then dispatched the South Colchester Academy Wolves 25-20, 26-24 in the quarter-final before taking down Corner Brook 25-22, 25-16 in the semifinal.
The Cougars #2 team started their tournament with straight sets wins over Prince Andrew #2 (25-10, 25-15) and Avon View #2 (25-4, 25-4) and split with Central Kings (25-10, 20-25).
Cobequid defeated Hants East #2 25-10, 25-13 in the quarter-final and won their semifinal match with Dr. John Hugh Gillis 25-16, 25-18.
Anastasia Callaghan did it all for the Cobequid #1 with 18 aces, 52 kills and 40 digs.
Kiersten Cormier was big in the final with four aces, nine blocks and six kills in 10 attempts. Heather Mills added 46 passes and 35 digs and Bethany Ferguson kicked in 11 kills.
Melissa Atkinson came up with 21 digs for the Cougars #2 squad while Brittany George made 70 successful serves including 21 aces. Nicole Munro collected 13 kills, 15 passes and 10 digs and Rachel Wright made 14 blocks.
Both Cougars squads are competing at the MacDonald's Invitational hosted by the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals in Antigonish.
