SPRINGHILL - Though still early in the season, this weekend will give the Cumberland County Blues an ideal opportunity to judge where they stand in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.
Tonight, they host the Sackville Blazers, then on Saturday they host the Strait Pirates.
"The boys are looking forward to the weekend," said Blues general manager Ron Reynolds. "It will give us a feeling as to where we're at this early in the season and that's what, as a team, we want to gauge. We want to see what our weaknesses and strengths are."
It's no secret the Blazers have consistently been one of the Blues' biggest rivals in the league but the Pirates proved to be a tough team after they fought to a 2-1 loss to the Blues last weekend in Port Hawkesbury.
"The rivalry with the Blazers started five years ago and hasn't let up," said Reynolds.
"And I expect Port Hawkesbury to be one of the top teams in the league this season. Both teams will challenge us as we try to repeat as one of the top teams in the league. Just looking at their rosters, both of them have very nice hockey teams. It's going to be two tough games for us and we're looking forward to the challenge."
He also said it's a weekend the fans should look forward to as well.
"From a fans aspect this is going to be as good of a weekend of hockey as you're ever going to get this season," he said.
Tyler Ferdinand is expected to start in net on Friday and it's a game-day goaltending decision for Saturday.
"We're very fortunate in the goaltending department," said Reynolds. "With Ferdinand and Andrew (Court), we have a good one-two punch."
Cole Wood and Brendan Grimes will be on the ice for the Blues this weekend but Jared Wilson is still out with an injury.
"We're starting to come along as far as being healthy," said Reynolds. "But Wilson will be at least another week before he's in the lineup."
The puck drops for both games at 7:30 p.m., at Richard Calder Arena.
