Cougars boys fall in semi of volleyball tournament

TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars were ousted in the semifinal of the Cougar Invitational boys volleyball tournament on the weekend at CEC.
The Cougars were defeated in straight sets by the Horton Griffins (18-25, 24-26). It was the second consecutive weekend the Cougars were eliminated in the semifinal of a tournament.
The Westisle Wolverines from Elmsdale, P.E.I, defeated Horton in straight sets for the tournament championship.
The Cougars were went undefeated until the semifinal with wins over Citadel (25-8, 25-18), Westisle (25-21, 21-25, 16-14), Horton #2 (25-4, 21-25, 15-11), and West Kings (25-19, 22-25, 15-10).
Leading the way for the Cougars were seniors Will Sandeson, who had a 67.7 per cent passing efficiency, five aces and 17 kills while Scott Worsley made 19 passes and 21 digs. Setter Cameron MacKenzie collected 110 assists.
Rookies Kristen O'Brien, with 26 kills, and Logan Baillie, with 14 passes, also made significant contributions.
The Cougars girls won the Bridgewater Invitational with a 25-13, 25-19 victory over the hosts in the final.
Cobequid went undefeated with wins over Yarmouth (25-7, 17-25, 15-1), Middleton (25-15, 25-20), Bridgewater (25-23, 17-25, 15-10) and Horton (25-16, 26-24).
Anastasia Callaghan, Kiersten Cormier and Bethany Ferguson were standouts for the Cougars at the event.
The Cougars are hosting the Cougar Classic this weekend. Action starts Friday and continues Saturday.
