AMHERST - Mixed martial arts takes centre stage in Amherst on Saturday when T.J. Grant comes to town to hold a MMA seminar and teach a few tricks of the trade at the Cumberland Freestyle Academy.
Grant hails from Cole Harbour and has gone on to fight on the big stage in the UFC.
"He's only the second person from the Maritimes to make it to the UFC," said Tim Skidmore, who teaches mixed martial arts at the Cumberland Freestyle Academy. "The other one is Jason MacDonald."
Grant, who fights at 170 pounds, has a record of 17-3, with his biggest win coming against Ryo Chonan at UFC 97 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
Going into the cage, Grant was aware that Chonan is one of only four fighters in the world who can lay claim to beating UFC superstar Anderson Silva. Silva has a record of 28-4 and is 10-0 in the UFC.
Grant next fight was a unanimous decision loss to Korea's Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 100 in Las Vegas, one of the highest-grossing pay-per-view events in history.
Grant has also trained several times in Cleveland with the Rich Franklin camp but does most of his training out of Fit Plus in Dartmouth.
"He has a brown belt in Brazilian Jujitsu and trains in Thailand for Muay Thai kickboxing," said Skidmore.
Grant will bring his trainer Scott MacLean to the seminar, which Skidmore said will "cover everything from striking to takedowns to submissions on the ground to ground and pound, and some defence on the ground as well."
The seminar is open to everybody, including beginners.
To participate, all you need are shorts, a T-shirt and a mouth guard.
Skidmore also recommends hand wraps.
The cost is $60 for people who participate and $20 for spectators.
"The space for spectators is limited," said Skidmore.
The seminar runs from 3-6 p.m. at the Cumberland Freestyle Academy, which is located at 10 Lawrence Street.
For more information call Skidmore at 660-5247.
