ST. THOMAS, Ont. - Fifth was just short of where the Brookfield Elks hoped they would finish at the Canadian Senior Men's Fastpitch Championship, but they're still happy with it.
The Elks earned the result after making plenty of noise at last week's tournament in St. Thomas, Ont., finishing the round robin tied for first at 5-2. Elks outfielder Mike Grant was named tournament MVP after finishing in a three-way tie for best batting average at .500. He then led the Elks by hitting .400 in the championship round.
"Everyone is pretty pleased," said Elks assistant coach Joel Campbell. "We didn't win a medal but we're certainly pleased with our effort."
After going 5-2 in the preliminary round the Elks dropped their first championship-round contest to the host St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials 9-6. A win in that contest would have guaranteed Brookfield at least a fourth-place finish.
"Our goal was fourth and in our minds that's where we could have finished realistically," Campbell said.
"We put up five runs after the second but unfortunately we couldn't hold off a really offensive team that hit us well. We rallied but didn't have enough time to score more runs."
Brookfield was then blanked 2-0 by the St. John's CBC Canadians to finish the tournament.
Campbell credited a team effort for the Elks' strong play at the tournament.
"We had very good pickups and everyone contributed," he said. "We got hits from everyone and our pitchers threw quite well.
"Randy (Frame) threw great against Kitchener, Corey (Avery) was excellent any time he had the ball.
"It was mostly a team effort," he said. "Everyone came to play and as the week wore on and we started to win it really helped our confidence and we believed in ourselves."
The Elks are already planning on attending next year's national tournament in Charlottetown
"We should have most of this team back," Campbell said.
