AMHERST - The Amherst Canadian Tire Selects are prepared for the 45th annual David Maltby Memorial Little League Baseball Tournament that kicks off here Saturday.
The Selects open the three-day even at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Ernie Landry Memorial Ball Park when they host the Blackstone A's from Massachusetts. Amherst also plays later in the day at the Sonny Foster Field against Sydney.
"We'll have a good defensive team and that's going to be important at this level," Selects coach Ken Clarke said. "It's going to be tough missing a couple of key pitchers, but I still think we'll be competitive."
Members of the team include Logan Dowe, Brandon Greeno and MacKenzie LeBlanc of the Cubs, Corey Hunter and Joel McCrossin of the Y's Guys, Evan MacKenzie and Carly Jackson of the Lions and Kier Hibberts, Emmitt Smith, Brady Davis, Lucas Sangster and MacKenzie Colford of the Mixers.
"Any game that Logan pitches we have a chance of winning, and there are a couple other guys who will step in on the mound. Brandon Greeno is a good pitcher and so is Brady Davis," Clarke said.
Offensively, Clarke said, the team will have a balanced attack with a couple of players with good power while every player should be able to contribute with singles and doubles and use their speed.
The team is selected from a vote of the A system's four coaches. Joining Clarke on the coaching staff are Carl LeBlanc and Steve O'Regan.
Amherst's other round-robin game is Sunday at 10 a.m., on the Landry field against Kennetcook.
Other teams attending the international tournament include Marlboro and Midland, Mass., as well as Truro and Sackville.
Games continue through Saturday and early Sunday with semifinals Sunday at 3 p.m., on both fields. The consolation final goes at 10 a.m., Monday with the championship at 2 p.m.
The official opening is Saturday at around 1 p.m. As in other years, the YMCA will be open that night for players, coaches and volunteers.
The host Selects and Marlboro are the co-defending champions after rain washed out last year's championship finale.
