TORONTO - Elena Dementieva has defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets to win the Rogers Cup championship.
Dementieva, the No. 4 seed, broke Sharapova four times in a sloppy first set and cruised from there on the way to a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
It's the third win of the season for Dementieva, but her first since winning back-to-back titles in Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia in January.
Playing in her first final in more than a year, Sharapova struggled with her serve, committing 10 double faults in the match - nine in the first set.
It's the second straight year a Russian has won the Rogers Cup title, after Dinara Safina captured last year's championship in Montreal.
Dementieva takes home US$350,000 for the victory, while Sharapova pockets $175,000.
