Two women killed, two children injured in Sydney, N.S., house fire

SYDNEY, N.S. - Two women are dead and two children in hospital following a fire today at a Sydney residence.

Cape Breton Regional Police said the women, ages 81 and 53, were found dead after both police and firefighters removed two children from the home in the city's Hardwood Hill area.

The fire began at about 3 a.m.

Staff Sgt. Mike Kennedy said officers heard the voices of children in the burning house and forced their way inside.

One child was found by police in a hallway while the other was found by Sydney firefighters elsewhere in the home.

The children, age 10 and six, were airlifted to hospital in Halifax but their condition isn't known.
