MEMBERTOU, N.S. - Mi'kmaq moose hunters have a new set of guidelines to follow that are meant to protect the herd and regulate the hunt in Cape Breton.
The guidelines are voluntary, which means there are no penalties for those caught breaking the rules.
Eric Zscheile, a negotiator with the Mi'kmaq Rights Initiative says Mi'kmaq hunters helped draft the guidelines and many are already following them.
According to treaty rights, aboriginal hunters are allowed to hunt the moose at any time of the year to feed family or their band.
The new guidelines, however, will prohibit moose hunting from Jan. 1 to Aug. 15.
Clifford Paul, the co-ordinator for moose management for the Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources, says the decision to limit the hunting season mirrors the life cycle of the animal.
