TRURO - St. Pete Star captured the $10,000 Robert McCain Memorial Pace over a rain-soaked track at Connell Park recently with a two-length victory in 1:56.1 for catch-driver Gilles Barrieau and owner Paul Gray of Pugwash.
The track was listed as two seconds off as a result of steady rain. St. Pete Star left from Post 7 and was able to get away fourth as Porthill Alf (Mike Stevenson) took the field to the opening quarter of 27.4. Barrieau moved the five-year-old Life Sign stallion to the outside before the 57-second half and surged to the front with a strong move on the backstretch.
