New signage tracks to Truros downtown

TRURO - Make tracks for Truro.
That is the concept behind a new street signage and banner program being implemented within the town.
"This signage is supposed to get people from the highway and into town and provide them with a way to do that," said Truro's planning director Jason Fox. "And as you make your way into town it's supposed to provide you with sort of ongoing visual clues as you find your way into downtown."
The signage program, a combined effort by the Town of Truro and the Downtown Truro Partnership, with a budget of just under $105,000, was born out of a master planning strategy developed about four years ago to help create visitor traffic to the downtown core.
"One of the issues that was identified is that people have a hard time finding downtown Truro from the highway," Fox said.
To help correct that, signs placed at key entry points into Truro - and equipped with a similar colour and lettering scheme - will direct visitors to the downtown area. New streets signs in the downtown core are also being replaced to make them more visible and a series of colour banners are being installed on the light standards along the major downtown thoroughfares.
The idea is to let the signage help provide a "unique identity" for the town and give it "some sense of place," Fox said.
"A big part of that was to create an identity for the downtown in terms of branding, colour scheme (and) fonts."
The program also includes merchant directory panels in front of Margolians and at the Marigold Cultural Centre, listing all downtown businesses and providing directions to them. As well, two information kiosks (community bulletin boards) are to be erected in front
of the public library and at the information centre.
Currently, only a couple of signs have been erected with more to follow in the near future. In addition to the signs and banners still to come, Fox said it may be necessary to increase the number of signs until it is determined that a sufficient number are in place.
"It's still a work in progress but most of the signage will be changing over within the next week," he said.

    This sign does not look like my waterfall.. I find it offensive that someone would use colored pencils to create an advertisement for one of my nicest features and not actually have it look anything like what it does.
    Also... Why not include that black sludge that was leaking from my sides? Accuracy is next to godliness.

    Excellent work. I really like how this town is FINALLY acknowledging the virtual reason for its existence - the railway.

    Hopefully we'll eventually see Inglis Place extended south to link with Victoria Park and have a new signature railway station built.

    The Truro Centre strip mall replaced one of Nova Scotia's most magnificent railway stations which was demolished in 1972 with nary a cry of opposition. You only have to look at how many U.S. cities and towns have taken to restoring their beautiful heritage railway stations to see how wrong Canada's approach was.

    At any rate, this marketing approach hits the right notes and will make an impression on visitors by acknowledging the historic reality of being the ''Hub of Nova Scotia''.
