TRURO - Tracy Cameron is turning in her boat for a bike to help Canadian athletes compete in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in
Vancouver.
Cameron, a Shubenacadie native who won a bronze medal in rowing at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, is competing in the Tour Transalps, the largest bike race over the Alps. The event begins in Germany, moves through Austria and ends in Arco, Italy. It is seven stages over seven days and is about 880 kilometres.
"Our winter athletes are in their final push to Vancouver and it's important for them to focus their energy on training, and not worry about finding money for better equipment and groceries," Cameron said in a release. "I know what it's like to struggle financially and when someone helps alleviate that burden it's incredibly uplifting. Having just realized my dream at the Games in Beijing, it's my turn to do what I can to give back to the CAN Fund."
Cameron is hoping seven companies will sponsor a stage of the event for $10,000, and 880 Canadians will sponsor one kilometer each for $10. For sponsorship information visit www.CanadianAthletesNow.ca.
