CHARLOTTETOWN - Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has nothing on a P.E.I. calf that recently took a marathon dip in the Hillsborough River.
The five-month old animal escaped from a farm in Stratford on June 6 and waded into the river before its owner, Dave Walker, could catch it.
"We watched and we were positive it'd gone under," he said Monday. "It was bobbing up and down for quite a while then disappeared."
Sure it had drowned, Walker contacted police and waited for the call to come in that they'd found the calf.
But that call didn't come until eight days later, after the calf was spotted on the other side of the river, several kilometres from where it went in.
"I couldn't believe it was still alive," he said. "I used to watch the westerns and would see the cows swimming but I never thought they actually could go that far."
"It was scratched up quite a bit, but it was fine."
